You can mix obsidian and steel?
hail, I have a gas forge, and are currently working with alloys (mostly for fun), and have the ability to melt steel, copper, silver etc.. I was wondering what is the melting temperature of obsidian, and because of it's high viscosity, would be able to mix with the steel (assuming that he would not be functional) .. and that the heating is lower viscosity .. to make it more fluid? .. might be able to mix with other metals? Any insight on this topic would be much appreciated, as I am anxious to try it (safe) thanks ..
You can mix in glass and steel? Why is simply obsidian amorphous silica. Naturally occurring glass. Bets are steel and glass are not compatible. Follow up ======= ======== djh1960 Hold on there, I did not say unambiguously that it could not happen, I just doubted it. And I do it again. I grew up around in welding and metal working. My father was a goldsmith. He melted gold in a ceramic bowl. The ceramic is a material unlike glass, and in no when the two combine to form a league. I'm pretty good with Google, and I can not find any reference to glass and steel to be tied. In this regard, I find very few references the combination of "glass" and "metals". There are some references to "glass-like metals," in which the metal is cooled very quickly so it does not crystallize, but I do not believe that our original speaker was referring to metals that behave like glass. There were some references to certain substances rather exotic ion ions were deposited. I'm pretty sure that most of these techniques are Fulgrim beyond the level of expertise (no offense intended). The question was, if I understand correctly, "may be fused glass and steel?" And then, "glass can be combined with other metals, by melting them?" I have seen no evidence so far, indicating that this is a particularly profitable. So I stand by my "probably not". Just for grins I googled "glass-iron" and watched the first 10 pages of links. There were a lot of references to stained glass windows and iron welding, and furniture and glass iron. There was one in which the glass was backed with iron. But I have not seen even a link to all the alloys of iron and glass. Joedoake is a good idea. Perhaps it would djh1960 wants to share his treasure of articles on glass-metal alloys.
